On my recent train journey to the ancestral homeland, I discovered a neat trick.
Dismayed by the myriad wind turbines disfiguring the well-loved landscape, I removed my glasses to rub my weary eyes and, thanks to the myopia I had until then deeply resented, they vanished almost without trace. At last, I have found an advantage to being short-sighted.
If only it were really that simple!
Just take your turbines off the highland hills
And the island hills - these are my land's hills!
We want no windmills on the highland hills
Buggering up the hills of home!

I cling onto the thought that they are highly visible follies. They don't work, almost everybody knows it and there they are - monuments to human folly.
ReplyDeleteAKH I wish I'd thought of that as an explanation to offer the Americans sitting opposite me in the train - they were aghast at what had been done to the landscape they had made a once-in-a-lifetime journey to see.
ReplyDeleteI know that we can't live in a theme park for the pleasure of visiting tourists, but it does seem that planners take a perverse pleasure in siting these things as visibly as possible in the most attractive vistas they can find - presumably not least because it makes the turbines look fantastic in the company prospectus.

ReplyDeleteWhen subjugating or bullying a population an important part of the process, which enhances the bully's enjoyment, is to force them to accept things they dislike and permanently remind them of their low status.
